About

Mostyn Williams was a private of the A Company, 11th Batt., ‘The Welsh’ Regiment. He joined the army shortly after the outbreak of the war (3 September 1914). One year later, he and his company was being sent overseas, and Williams started writing a diary. In brief daily notes he records his observations and offers us an insight into his life at the front.

The diary was transcribed by Williams’s grand-children who shared it through the Europeana 1914-1918 website. The entries are also shared via Twitter on the centenary of the date when the entry was written. This blog picks up some of the entries and add some comments and images where possible. The diary entries are all by Mostyn Williams, as given in the transcript. The images are from a variety of sources, as recorded for each item. The material has been collated by Ylva Berglund Prytz, part of the Education Enhancement Team at the University of Oxford.
